Sardinia in April : climate, weather, temperatures, places to visit and tips for your spring vacation on the island
1. What is the weather like in Sardinia in April?
Mild and pleasant with occasional showers.
The weather in April on Sardinia is typically a quietly mild spring one. Depending on my living experience here, on average, the temperatures are around 10°C to 18°C (50°F to 64°F). It is quite calming, not too hot, and not snowing. According to my weather data, the climate will pretty much be awesome. The temperatures will be like 10 to 18°C, which will be for the most time mild and nice, including some clowdsqueaatlude. The usual temperature lies around the 10-18 °C range. It is a dry and mild season which is perfect for outdoor activities. However, it should be noted that showers are expected to fall in April. We have rain approximately for some 6-8 days in the month. Donquil is, you might see a few clouds gathering and then disappearing. If the sun is shining and there is no rain, the temperature around the sea is around 15°C (59°F), but it could be a bit brisk for a quick swim and it will be just ideal for seaside walks and basking in the sun on the warmer days.
2. Is April a good time to visit Sardinia?
Yes, ideal for nature lovers and cultural enthusiasts.
April is the best time for enjoying Sardinia in my opinion. The place has fewer people compared to the busy summer months, which allows you to enjoy the secure and beautiful beaches we have and the historical sites easily. The weather couldn’t be better for outdoor activities such as trekking, cycling, and visiting on a tour. Easter is usually the first to embrace the festivities in Sardinia with many attractions and festivals being planned around the region. As a local, I really like the jubilant spirit in the beach towns, especially during the Easter holiday that is commonly in April. We are blessed with the spectacle of nature with lush greeneries and blooming wildflowers, which makes it a photographer’s playground. Besides, you will find prices of accommodation and flights much more available compared to the high season.
3. What are the best activities to do in Sardinia during April?
Hiking, cultural tours, food experiences, and beach exploration.
There are simple activities available in Sardinia in April. In my case, since I have spent a long period on the island, I’ve had the opportunity to explore all the areas and this has given me an in-depth knowledge of the best places to see:
- Hiking: The weather makes the Gorropu Gorge and the Wild Blue coastal paths the best places for trekking.
- Cultural Tours: Take a tour to places such as Su Nuraxi di Barumini, one of the well-preserved ancient nuraghi (prehistoric stone structures).
- Food Experiences: April is the season for agriturism. You can sample some of the best pecorino cheese and Cannonau wine in the country. April is also a great time for Agriturismo and winetasting. Make sure you won’t miss out on trying amazing pecorino cheese and Cannonau wine.
- Beach Exploration: While the probability of unpleasant weather is high, you could walk along the beaches for affordable distances and enjoy nature away from tourists.
- Birdwatching: You will love seeing flamingos at the Molentargius-Saline Regional Park.
- Easter Celebrations: In April, Easter is the time to rejoice at our local festivities. Get a feel of what I am talking about by participating in the local processions and happenings during Easter for free.
All these activities in their unique ways bring out different but significant aspects of Sardinia’s culture and nature, hence providing a well-orchestrated presentation of our island.
4. Are the beaches in Sardinia suitable for swimming in April?
Generally too cold for swimming, but perfect for beach walks and sunbathing.
Given that I have resided by the Sardinian coast for all these years, I can assure you that a swim in April can be really cold. The average sea temperature in Sardinia in April is approximately 15°C (59°F) that is often the deciding factor for going into the sea or look for other sources. The water is mostly too cold for people who don’t mind. Yet, on the occasion of warm days, you’ll see the odd lunatic take a quick dip. However, even with that, the beaches are still impeccable in April. Besides, it is a great time for quiet strolls, shell hunting at the beach and then you can carry out some basking activities in the evening. I like to visit Chia, La Pelosa, and Cala Gonone for example. At this time of the year, these places along the coastline are the best for visiting. The absence of vacationers means that you can witness the natural attractiveness of the seaside instead of shops, nightclubs, and other commercial activities.
5. What should I pack for a trip to Sardinia in April?
Layers, rain gear, comfortable shoes, and beach essentials.
Based on my own experience and observation of many April Sardinias, I suggest to pack:
- Layers: Things might change and weather could get difficult. Hence, it is necessary to bring a set of slightly warm clothes as well as light clothes as an alternative.
- Rain Gear: Bring a light waterproof jacket or an umbrella in case you run into possible rain showers.
- Comfortable Shoes: You will need at least a good pair of walking shoes or boots when you go on your tours and hikes.
- Beach Essentials: The common ones – sunblock, hat, and sunglasses. The sun remains hot even during the time when it is not hot outside, therefore, use it wisely.
- Swimwear: Bring them just in case the water is warm enough and you want to go for a swim.
- Camera: So, you don’t miss the possibility of snapshotting the lovely spring landscapes.
- Light Sweater or Jacket: To avoid the inevitable cool nights
Even though the days may get warm, the nights usually turn quite cool. The best thing is to have clothes for all weather conditions with you at all times.
6. Are there any special events or festivals in Sardinia in April?
Yes, including Easter celebrations, food festivals, and cultural events.
Sardinia is a place for the hearty with several April events that all invite getting together and having a good time. Enthusiastically, I have had the golden chance to participate in the vast majority of these Sardinian events which I would like to share with you below:
- Easter Celebrations: Assuming Easter is in April, pilgrimages to different towns like Alghero and Castelsardo are a must-see.
- Sa Die de sa Sardigna: This is the Sardinian national day, which is celebrated on the 28th of April, in memory of the French viceroy’s eviction in 1794.
- Sagra del Carciofo: The Artichoke Festival, Samassi is a very popular event that is being visited by people from all over the country who are admirers of this vegetable and love the festival.
- Cavalcata Sarda: The main features of this event, a grand equestrian parade in Sassari, usually start to ensure the successful performance ahead in April as the month of May approaches.
- Wine and Food Events: The autumn festivals in many small towns bring out many rural products.
These gatherings provide an exclusive view of Sardinia’s cultural and traditional traits. I warmly advise you to include these moments in your visit if you are here during these occasions.
7. What are the best places to visit in Sardinia in April?
Cagliari, Alghero, Costa Smeralda, Barbagia region, and archaeological sites.
Every corner of Sardinia is enriched with its unique charm, and my experience as a frequent visitor to Sardinia has identified the places that one must not miss during a visit in April:
- Cagliari: Our boson that gives the mixture of a historical background, the scenery that you can’t really see anywhere else, and the friendly nature of the locals.
- Alghero: Right by the pleasant temperatures of April, it becomes absolutely worth checking the local aspects of this catalanian-influenced town. It is generally more touristic during dry summer.
- Costa Smeralda: It is surely amazing here and a big plus is that there are nearly no tourists at this time and the prices are cheap.
- Barbagia Region: This will be a unique way for you to be introduced to Sardinian culture, history, and mainly cuisine.
- Su Nuraxi di Barumini: A world heritage site and an ancient nuragical complex that is, by chance, less crowded in the month of April.
- Bosa: A picturesque town on the river with walls around the medieval castle. It too is famous for its wine.
- Golfo di Orosei: This is a great spot for hiking along with a boat trip to get to the beaches that are difficult to reach by walking.
Each of the destinations reveals different aspects of the life and the panorama of the Sardinian island and together they bring out a genuine reality of our island, retaining the truly bewitching atmosphere that is sure to leave a real lasting impression on you.
8. How crowded is Sardinia in April compared to peak season?
Much less crowded, offering a more authentic and relaxed experience.
I should say that April in Sardinia is in a complete turnover market that is quite different from the booming summer months of July and August. I assure you that attractions and places you love to visit in an overcrowded environment won’t be overpopulated in April as they are in summer. The lack of the horde presents a quieter atmosphere than in the summer and thus a more genuine experience of the island. It is advisable to use this time to get along the tourist routes until late at night since almost all supermarkets and restaurants are open but not as full as normal. However, it should be mentioned that seasonal hotels and resorts, especially in smaller coastal towns, may not be open until May. Generally, April has some positive and negative sides, but the major attractions are operational and available.
9. What are the average temperatures in Sardinia during April?
Daytime highs of 18-20°C (64-68°F), nighttime lows of 10-12°C (50-54°F).
Contemplating the many Aprils of Sardinia I had in my past, mostly, the Aprils were like this on average; day temperature lasted at 18-20°C (64-68°F), which are the warmest hours during the regular day. It is a bit warm yet the wind deflects the heat rays. At the same time, the evenings are cooler tempering from 10-12°C (50-54°F), thus, you may want a jacket or a sweater on when outside. Actually, the temperature can differentiate significantly from region to region. On the coast, the weather is more easily affected by the sea and is usually warmer, while the inner part of the island is expected to be cooler especially after sunset. Besides, do mind by the way April occasionally throws freaky weather, like, it may get upto 25°C (77°F), especially during the last weeks of the month, and on the other hand, it might have a hard time reaching 15°C (59°F) on some days. On a hole, the weather in the spring months stays fair and cool enough for exploring the beautiful places of the island.
10. Is April a good time for hiking in Sardinia?
Excellent time for hiking with mild weather and blooming landscapes.
Randy W. Smith (2015) suggests how one of the best routes to get out hiking is during this period of hiking in Sardinia. The cooler temperatures are very convenient and much better for hiking in that they provide a break from the scorching heat in summer. This time of the year is the highlight of magnificence exhibited by the practically untouched habitats turning lush with wildflowers everywhere. Here are my favorite hiking spots:
- The beautiful Gorropu Gorge: Overlooking Europe’s most stunning gorge gives a panoramic view.
- Selvaggio Blu Trail: This trail consists of the eastern coastal part of Sardinia and it is a very challenging multi-day backpacking trip.
- Monte Limbara: The whole scene will be breath-taking wherever you cast your eyes.
- Villaggio di Barumini: A highly essential destination of Sardinia because it is one of the most preserved nuragical complexes of all times. Hence, the best time to go there is hardly ever in April.
- The Seven Brothers Range: The hike brings you to spectacular places in the lush nature and it provides you with the chance to spot some very interesting wildlife such as spring fawns.
The basic things you will need to enjoy a good hike are the appropriate apparel you and your kids will put on especially the solid outdoor footwear, sufficient water, and proper dress in case the temperatures shift–it is always wise to get some local information first before wandering off.
11. What are the best historic sites to visit in Sardinia in April?
Nuraghi complexes, Roman ruins, medieval towns, and prehistoric sites.
The case of historical tourism is a little bit different. The island of Sardinia is fully colorful since April is the time when most of the people are out and enjoying the good weather; thus it may be the best time to travel around the island. This does not mean there are no historical sites. Rather, the more normal the weather becomes, the more people are attracted to the island. In spring, the parks and hometowns of the cities are not as crowded as in summer. These are the essential sites to visit in the suburbs:
- The Su Nuraxi di Barumini: It is a UNESCO World Heritage site, a wonderfully cared and preserved nuragic complex.
- The Nora Archaeological Site: A vast area of old Phoenician and Roman ruins along Romeo beach.
- The Tharros: Another stunning Sri Lankan archaeological site with impressive Roman and Punic remains, the area offers kite-surfing schools and has delicious seafood.
- Castello di Acquafredda: Besides being a unique place of our cultural heritage, you will get to have an unforgettable view on the top.
- Necropoli of Anghelu Ruju: This is mainly notable for its size and uniqueness, with the most important graves discovered so far being in this cave.
- Alghero Old Town: It is the old town with its Catalan-Gothic buildings and buildings with walls around it that are significant pieces of the medieval city.
- Giants’ Tomb of Coddu Vecchiu: This majestic chambered gallery grave ranks as one of the best in the world.
The favorable climate of April enables walking with the ruins of all the unbuilt structures, and the spread of the countryside roses makes the entire journey beautiful and charming. You’ll need to bring comfortable shoes, water, and your camera to remember this historical treasure.

Refer to COVID-19 rules and standard EU entry guidelines.
I am someone who has always had the habit of being the host of guests and I usually stop at nothing to advise them on checking the most recent travel information before setting out of home. Below is a list of the basics you need to know:
- Sardinia sticks to the entrance requisites of the whole of Italy’s roofing body.
- EU citizens are allowed to come in if they present a valid ID card or a passport.
- Non-EU citizens usually require a passport and a visa depending on the country from where they are coming.
